Sustainable Urban Enlightenment
A Human-centered lighting approach
The city is not only an urbanistic identity, it is a "synesthetic" living body driven by its inhabitants and where above all sight and hearing are decisive for the purposes of its history and development. In this sense, people's visual perception becomes essential, and in this light plays a primary role.
Light is elusive and ephemeral, but defines the spaces and forms of architecture; light is presence, it gives life, it enables the carrying out of daily activities, light is connection, it creates links. From a human-centric perspective, light has a new ethical identity that transcends its mere functional dimension. The challenge for SOS students was therefore to bring function and features together, to design a socially and environmentally sustainable light source that could meet the needs of citizens.

The challenge for SOS students was therefore to bring function and features together, to design a socially and environmentally sustainable light source that could meet the needs of citizens.

After having conducted several analysis on the Unipol’s Business Park of Via Dei Missaglia and having studied case studies on two different urban areas in Milan, thanks also to creative discussions with Artemide's representatives, SOS students designed Lumos, an urban lighting initiative that aims to brighten lives and bring people together through innovative solutions that revitalize a space.
The concept
Starting from the human body, we minimize the lines and arrive to a triangular shape which is reflected in all of our lighting elements.
- Bring beauty and identity to a place with lighting elements
- Need for a symbol

The different elements of Lumos are categorized into two lighting systems: the ground system and the verticle/ ceiling modular system. The ground system includes the guide lights where as the modular system includes "Tria" and the "Right lights". All lighting systsems are influenced by the "Ambient lighting system". The sitespecific features are made up of the "Whispering Woodlands", an installation that showcases the relationship between nature, humans and light.
The Ambient Lighting
The temperature of light is directly related to the human circadian rhythm. In order to cooperate with the circadian rhythm, the ambient lighting system is initiated throughout the site. It is a time sensitive program that determines the warmth and brightness of the fixtures throughout the site based on the time of day.

The Guide Lights
The guide light system is a single linear light that runs through the entire site connecting all of the elements together. This illuminated fixture provides a suggested path for inhabitants to follow in order to get around the area and observe all the lighting elements in which it is incorporated.
Tria
The tria series features three variations of the triangular concept:
The tria series features three variations of the triangular concept:
- Tria Portal
a structure that emulates a portal which allows users to feel like they are crossing over into an entirely new space - Tria Wings
bollards that can be used as path lighting or can be wall mounted

Right Lights
The "Right Lights" are a triangular double panel lighting element connected with an adjustable shaft and top panel for customisable height, length and positioning.

Whispering Woodlands
The "Whispering Woodlands" is an installation that showcases the relationship between nature, humans and light. The raised wooden base provides a platform for a multitude of activities that are open to interpretation by each individual.
